Preparing Your Home for a Roofing Project

Your roofing system is a crucial investment in your home. That’s why homeowners are encouraged to prepare for a significant project like replacements and repairs ahead of time. From finding contractors to overseeing the entire process, it’s better to be ready every step of the way. Not only will it benefit you in saving time for your usual routines, but it will also help your roofer get the job done quickly.

In this post, local stucco remediation and roofing experts share measures you should consider in preparation for a roof installation.

  • Do your homework. Getting a new roof requires the expertise of a reliable roofer to ensure the job is done correctly. Select a contractor with experience and a good reputation to carry out your project and provide you with high-quality materials. You can do this by searching online and asking your friends or neighbors for recommendations.

A few things you have to check beforehand are your prospective company’s credentials. Ensure they are licensed and insured. Go through their websites and social media accounts to glean more information about them.

  • Plan your schedule. There is usually a lot of noise and disruption during a roofing project. Several roofing contractors will remind you that your daily activities can be affected while work is ongoing. To some people, it may be ideal to look for a temporary place to stay as the project progresses. If the project isn’t something as extensive as an installation, you can opt to remain in your home, but it will be beneficial to secure an area where you’ll be able to work and attend to your tasks.

Moreover, consider how unpleasant the hammering and the strangers would be for your pets and children. If possible, ask a relative to have them stay over until the project is finished. Should your pets need to be indoors, do your best to make sure they are comfortable. And if you have young adults at home who opt not to leave the house, remind them to be careful of debris around your home.

  • Protect your indoor spaces and belongings. Although roofing projects will require your contractor to work mostly outside, it’s still essential to ensure your interior and belongings are safe from potential damage. Remember that installing a new roof can cause your walls to vibrate and nails from your shingles may fall on your yard or other living spaces. Furthermore, if you have roof accessories like TV dishes, skylights and solar panels, your roofer will likely have to remove them. Here are a few other things you should take note of:
  • Reduce the risk of damage to your property by clearing out areas affected by the installation process. Secure any hanging objects and fragile items inside your home. Make sure dishes, glass, vases and other breakables aren’t touching each other or the wall. Most stucco and roofing installers suggest moving the furniture to a place that’s less likely to be damaged by excessive vibration or falling debris.
  • Protect your attic and garage. If you have items in the attic, it’s better to store them on the ground floor in the meantime. Meanwhile, if you have a built-in garage, it would need extra protection too. Note that this space typically does not have insulation, and stopping dust and granules from dropping through the roofing system may be difficult.
  • Cut your grass short before roof installation begins, as advised by roofing contractors. It makes a huge difference to ensure your area has shorter grass. It will make it easier for your roofers to use a magnetic nail finder to recover any nails or staples that go astray during a roof replacement.
  • Remove your wall decor as hammering vibrations can knock down your paintings or framed photographs. Wall mirrors and shelves should be kept safe too.
  • The workers will be walking over your yard as they install your new roof. They will likely lay down tarps to protect your yard and park a dumpster in your driveway for efficient cleaning and disposal.
  • Be a good neighbor. Talk to your neighbors, especially those nearest to your home and those with kids, pets and elders. Informing these people about your project can help them prepare too. This also minimizes misunderstandings that could cause conflicts or complaints about your project.
  • Secure an HOA approval. If you live in an HOA community, you’ll likely need to apply for a permit to replace your roof. Talk to your HOA board to confirm the process and requirements so that you can avoid paying fines or redoing the installation. Ensure that your new roof complies with the rules set by your HOA.
  • Provide your contractor with adequate access to your home. Tearing off an old roof and installing a new one will require a lot of space in your property. Check and clear your driveway and sidewalk before the roofers arrive. Keep your outdoor furniture out of the way and protect your garden. You can use tarps for your yard so that it won’t be damaged. Furthermore, your lawn must be trimmed to make it easier for the crew to move. Experts also suggest calling an exterminator to get rid of pests that could pose a problem during your roof installation.

It also pays to choose a professional roofing company with a track record of superior workmanship as they will ensure your roof is installed correctly and any underlying damage is addressed and repaired. Although installing a new roof is a major exterior home improvement, working with an established contractor will make the procedure easy and hassle-free.
