Roofing Errors That Can Void Your Warranty

Your roofing system is made up of specially designed components that require proper installation and care. If an error was made in using or installing these components, the performance and integrity of your roof will likely be compromised. Moreover, your roof warranty might also be at risk of becoming void.

In this post, roofing and stucco expert Precision #1 Contractors Inc. discusses the most common roofing mistakes that could void your warranty.

Installation of New Shingles Over Old Ones

The practice of installing new shingles over old, existing ones is often referred to as re-roofing. In some cases, this method of roof installation can be done. But depending on the manufacturer’s roof installation instructions, you may or may not be allowed to install new shingles over old ones. If the instructions require tearing off the old roofing material, make sure that your roofing contractor removes it before they install your new shingles.

Use of Incompatible Materials

Roofing contractors must use appropriate and compatible materials for your roof system. Keep in mind that a roof system is designed to work with specific components so as to deliver optimal performance. Never use shingles from one manufacturer along with underlayment or starter shingles from another manufacturer. Apart from voiding your warranty, mixing incompatible roofing materials may also affect the integrity of your roofing.

Failure to Create Proper Ventilation

Your roof should be properly ventilated so that the system can be protected from a host of problems including warping in the roof deck, buckled shingles, premature roof failure, molds and mildew, and more. Good contractors will make sure that your attic has good ventilation.
