If you plan to build a new home or create an addition to your home’s structure, it’s important to decide what kind of supporting structure you will build to keep your roof intact. Unless you’re installing a flat roof, you’re presented with two choices – rafters and trusses. While they share some similarities, they have some distinct differences. In this post, Precision #1 Contractors Inc, the leading stucco and roofing contractor in your area, shares the differences between the two.
Rafters are long planks that measure in 2x10s or 2x12s. It slopes down along the central ridge beam, which is situated on top of your roofing system and intersects with the exterior walls. The rafters function to support your roofing system and roof sheathing. Other roofing contractors call the usage of rafters in roof construction “stick framing”.
Your roofing and siding contractor would describe trusses as a prefabricated structure that is made of wood. It creates a triangular webbing of structural members that supports your roofing system while bringing together the exterior walls of your home at the same time. They stand together with chords, which are the sloping beams that expand above the trusses. The main function of both the beams and ties is to spread the weight of the roof over a wide area, rather than isolating it into one spot.
A key difference between the two is that trusses are created using pre-engineered structures in a factory, while rafters are hand-constructed on-site. Rafters are mainly beneficial for attic spaces that will be converted into rooms later on since they offer superior insulation as a radiant barrier. They also offer greater stability and quality control off the line since it’s designed using a computer, making each truss accurate down to the millimeter. This makes it resistant to weather exposure. Their main drawback is that they do not allow for extra rooms, reducing your attic space.
